When he wakes up Calpurnia informs his with a touching, but great surprise. Everyone who supported Tom Robinson in his case, also ended up supporting Atticus too for his hard defensive work in the court room. He is grateful for the gifts(basically food) but does not want to accept them because times are rough. Later in the day, Miss Maudie explains to Jem that more people support the defense team than he thought, She and Jem converse, "Who in this town did one thing to help Tom Robinson, just who?"

"His colored friends for one thing, and people like us. People like Judge Taylor. People like Mr. Heck Tate. Stop eating and start thinking, Jem. Did it ever strike you that Judge Taylor naming Atticus to defend that boy reasons for naming him?.... It was no accident... I waited as I thought, Atticus Finch won't win, he can't win, but he's the only man in these parts who can keep a jury out so long in a case like that." ( Lee, 288-289)(New Book).

It is a pretty peaceful week in Maycomb for the Finch family. Dill is in Maycomb for good, Scout is listening to her Aunt, and Jem had lost interest in his tree house and is now in the ownership of Dill and Scout. After all this mellowness, there comes a knock on the door from Mr. Heck and other men. Jem detects something fishy but lets it go this time. But when Atticus left that night, Jem knew something was wrong. He wakes up Scout and Dill so they can go find Atticus (though they are aware they could get in huge trouble). When they find Atticus by Tom Robinson's jail cell, they also find a mob (containing Mr. Heck in it) walking toward Atticus. Jem tells Scout to stay back and don't interfere but she cant help it. She runs toward Atticus and pretty soon all 3 kids are by the jail cell trying to help Atticus. In the end the kids stay so long, the Mob drives away.
